Who We Are
Originally founded in 1948 as the Hoxie Ambulance Co., Mystic River Ambulance can trace its origins to a group of firefighters from the B.F. Hoxie Engine Co., in Mystic, Connecticut. A hearse-style ambulance was purchased and subsequently stationed at Hoxie Engine Co. on Cottrell Street with volunteers responding to medical emergencies.
In 1981, Hoxie Ambulance Co. separated from the B.F. Hoxie Engine Co., forming the Mystic River Ambulance Association. Volunteers staffed one ambulance headquartered at B.F. Hoxie Engine Co., eventually expanding and purchasing a second ambulance which was stationed out of Old Mystic Fire Headquarters on Cow Hill Road. A campaign to build a building was undertaken in 1991, and in 1993 Mystic River Ambulance Association moved into its current building on Sandy Hollow Road in Mystic.
Today, Mystic River Ambulance remains a non-profit volunteer association with a fleet of four Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulances. A combination of highly skilled volunteers and paid staff respond to emergency calls for medical services and transport 24/7 in the Groton and Stonington areas encompassing Mystic, Old Mystic, Groton Long Point, Noank, Quiambaug, Mason’s Island, and Mumford Cove.
